Western Australia’s commercial fishing fleet has reached new heights with the  addition of a new 26m aluminium vessel boasting the latest ocean going design technology, build process, engine installation and crew facilities.

The Shoreline 86 is a long range vessel and for reliability purposes features twin engines, twin hydraulic systems and a pair of power-generating units. She will operate in deep waters between Augusta in the south to Exmouth in the north, including the pink snapper fishery out of Carnarvon.

Sea trials off Fremantle attracted international interest with engineers from Yanmar’s Japan and Singapore offices on board to experience first-hand the performance of the 86 ft Ada Clara, built to service the State’s massive coastal deep-water wet fish industry. If required, builder Shoreline Marine Fabrication of Henderson has also constructed the boat to facilitate rapid conversion to operate in the Western Rock Lobster fishery.

In an industry that demands hard work and long hours; often in harsh, cramped conditions, it’s refreshing to see the thought that has gone into the Ada Clara to achieve a positive working environment, ultimately resulting in a fresh, quality, product in the market place.

Designed by naval architect Gavin Mair and his team from Global Marine Design, the 65 tonne vessel is the product of decades of experience by all involved; designers, shipwrights, engine manufacturer and perhaps most of all, the owner who has been directly involved in the West Australian fishing industry for many years.

Shoreline Marine directors Brad Moseley and Brad Van Rongen supervised their team of 18 highly skilled tradesmen to custom build this ‘high spec’ vessel to the owner’s every need, including superior accommodation and living facilities for its crew.

“I chose Shoreline to build the boat because of their attention to detail and their ability to work with the client to develop a better outcome than a standard boat in the way it functions,” the owner said.

Shoreline Marine Fabrication continues to expand on its already impressive reputation to build customised vessels for the commercial, government and private sectors. In recent years two customised Shoreline fishing vessels have been added to Australia’s Southern Rock Lobster fleet out of Port McDonald in South Australia, with yet another now taking shape on the factory floor along with two other large fishing vessels for West Australian clients.

“It’s important to us that we work closely with the client. This hull was a kit boat from Global Marine Design but when we reached a certain level we worked very closely with the owner who is a well experienced fisher and knew exactly what he wanted. For its size, it’s a low profile vessel even though it has a raised wheelhouse plus flybridge. It’s one of the biggest customised vessels Shoreline has built and most of the project has been completed in-house, with help from specialist contractors brought in to assist with some of the fit out, electrical and engineering aspects,” added Brad Moseley.

Shoreline Marine has worked hard for many years to establish a valued relationship with its specialist partners, workers, suppliers, affiliates and clients and it’s this work ethic that attracts new and repeat customers.

With the ability to stay at sea for up to five days and the owner’s believe that ‘a good crew is a happy, efficient crew’, the Ada Clara boasts a queen bed master cabin with ensuite, a second queen cabin and six single bunks. A large common room with satellite television is starboard of the helm station on the raised deck that leads to a detailed galley and then to the accommodation on the lower level. It means the crew can still use the kitchen facilities without disturbing the skipper. Hygiene and wash-down stations are included in all work areas to help maintain a healthy crew.

Thirty three year old New Zealander Jonah Neho will be at the helm of  this state-of-the-art vessel which topped 25 knots during initial sea trials off Fremantle. “The vessel has excellent sea-keeping abilities and the motors proved to be super quiet –  importance features considering we’ll be clocking up around 1,500 hours a year out there,” said Jonah.

The vessel is fitted with twin 749kW Yanmar 6AYEM-GT engines featuring a new staggered injection nozzle combustion chamber design to minimise fuel consumption and optimise performance. Senior service engineer with installation company, Power Equipment, Jim Kibblewhite, said the new vessel did better through the entire rev range of the engines than most he had seen. “Her waterline length no doubt helps with that. At 75 per cent engine load she achieved 19 knots, while at 50 per cent load we were still clocking 16.5 knots,” Jim said.

Furuno electronics are fitted in the wheelhouse. The FCV-1900 sonar is matched with a 3kW transducer giving a 1500m depth reading capability, plus a 2kW unit for shallow water. Another 19-inch monitor carries Furuno’s WAASP multi-beam sonar with 3D floor mapping features. Mitch Croft from Geraldton Marine Electronics says slave monitors have been installed on the flybridge, plus CCTV security to monitor crew whereabouts and safety on the vessel.

Remarkable Versatile New Shoreline 86 Powered by Yanmar

A new multi-purpose fishing vessel paired with Yanmar 6AYEM-GT series engines is set to create

waves in Western Australia’s marine industry.

Shoreline Marine Fabrication based in Henderson built the 86-foot Global Marine Design aluminium vessel. It was launched for sea trials and systems testing off Fremantle in December,2018 and it turned in an impressive performance.

Named the Ada Clara, the 26.2m long,50 tonne fishing craft can carry a 14-plus tonne fuel and catch load and will take its place as the flagship for the Western Wild Fisheries company.

Ada Clara has two 749kW Yanmar 6AYEM-GT marine engines which are designed to minimise fuel consumption and optimise  performance with precise digitally-controlled fuel injection.

Power Equipment supplied the engines and before the build,Power Equipment WA Sales Manager, Nick Marsden,met with the owner and Shoreline Marine to discuss the advantages ofYanmar’s new electronic,common-rail version of the proven 6AY Series.

Nick says with its 20-litre displacement and a long stroke, the Yanmar 6AYEM-GT produces very high torque.

“Thanks to 500-hour maintenance intervals,long fuel injector life and Yanmar’s renowned low fuel consumption,these engines keep running costs to a minimum, which is what commercial marine operators require.

“The key to the performance and efficiency of the 6AY Series is the new staggered injection nozzle and patented ‘ASSIGN’ combustion chamber design. Yanmar originally developed ASSIGN for large bore, low speed propulsion engines, so it allows for a very wide rpm range and delivers outstanding fuel consumption.”

Because this was the first time 6AY engines with ASSIGN have been used is this type of application, Shoreline Marine’s installation attracted engineers from Yanmar Japan and Yanmar Asia (Singapore). They visited Fremantle during the Ada Clara’s sea trials to get a first-hand look at performance of the

6AYEM-GT engine and how it performs and suits the Australian commercial fishing vessels.

Power Equipment National Marine Sales Manager Mark Butterfield says Australia is the biggest market outside of Japan for Yanmar 6AYEM-GT engines.

“6AYEM-GT engines are used successfully in many commercial marine sectors in Australia,and this latest application has shaped up as a fantastic fit,” Mark says.

Mark says the Ada Clara’s on-water speeds in initial runs were “remarkable”.

19 knots, while at 50 percent load we were still clocking 16.5 knots.”

The 737-kilowatt 6AYEM-GT engines are coupled  to 2.48:1gearboxes which allow one metre diameter propellers to be swung on the shafts.

“Even with a simulated  full fuel and catch load put on board during trials, the engines lost less than

15 rpm at wide-open-throttle,” Jim says. “This is proof  of a good set up of electronically-controlled direct-injection engines and a quality  installation.”

The Ada Clara’s engines produced  no visible smoke during start-up or manoeuvring and very little during heavy load acceleration  tests,which is in line with  Yanmar’s aim to produce  engines that surpass global emission standards.

Shoreline Marine has built the Ada Clara to be a versatile vessel, and the design could have applications  in other industries,including oil and gas, charters or marine  research.

Ada Clara’s initial work load will be line fishing for species-specific catches in deeper waters along the Western Australia coast. It will clock up around 1,500 hours a year on her engines, depending on weather and market  conditions.

Fishing deep water takes a lot of steaming time. This means the power that the Yanmar 6AYEM-GT can produce combined with the speeds the Ada Clara is capable of,will deliver fresher fish back to market and a quicker turnaround.

The new owner says during its trials the Ada Clara showed excellent  sea-keeping abilities. It is also very quiet  which is good because noise equals fatigue in any working environment.

The decision to specify the Yanmar 6AYEM-GT engines was based on their power-to-weight ratios, service intervals,and speed ratios relative  to fuel consumption.

The 6AYEM-GT engines provide easy access to all maintenance points, even for major works if required. For example, individual pistons can be removed  without removing the engine.

Everyone involved in the launch of the Ada Clara is happy with the results. Power Equipment is impressed with Brad Moseley’s Shoreline Marine  build quality and installation ofthe 6AYEM-GT engines.
